Aberdeen University Student Union Murals (2)
Robert
Sivell
designed
murals
for
the
large
concert
hall
(later
turned
wine
bar)
in
the
building
at
11
Gallowgate.
The
building
served
as
the
Aberdeen
University
Student
Union
from
1937-2004.
The
murals
were
painted
primarily
by
graduate
students
led
by
Sivell,
with
Albert
Morocco
and
Gordon
Cameron
being
the
lead
painters.
Sivell
painted
and
drew
full
size
studies
for
the
murals,
and
may
have
sketched
the
scenes
onto
the
walls.
The
murals
took
many
years,
with
significant
disruption
during
WWII,
and
were
declared
officially
complete,
albeit
reluctantly
on
Sivell's
part,
in
1853.
Restoration
work
was
completed
on
the
murals
in
1993.
Most
of
the
building
has
been
empty
since
it
was
closed
in
2004,
and
the
murals
covered
for
preservation.
