"Marion Patterson GM (nee Chalmers; 1911–1993[1]) was a Scottish fire warden during World War II. She was awarded the George Medal for helping to save sailors trapped in the rubble of a bombed building.[2] Her medal was presented by King George VI at Buckingham Palace.[3] "

"The Scottish artist Robert Sivell was commissioned by King George VI to paint Patterson’s portrait.[8] Patterson attended Buckingham Place again for the presentation of the portrait. The original was hung in the National Gallery, London and was displayed in a special wing for Heroes and Heroines of the 1939-1945 War.

Patterson also received two replicas of the portrait and a sketch in black and white. One replica is in the Ottawa Canadian War Museum and was on display as part of the Women At War exhibit at the museum in 1985. Patterson’s medals and the sketch are now kept in Aberdeen Art Gallery.[9] "

Given to Tom and Geyla Camp in 1962 or '63.
This painting actually has a title, based on the song "De Brevitate Vitae" (Life is Short). The song is commonly known as "Gaudeamus igitur" which is translated as "so let us rejoice". This piece was a popular academic song in many European countries, sung or performed at university graduation ceremonies but also to accompany a round of beer!

The painting was in the artist's personal collection, and is listed in the catalogue for his memorial exhibit, courtesy of his wife Isobel (my grandmother). I feel that these two men were well known to my grandfather; perhaps friends and companion artists. Could this be a portrait of John Lamont and another artist friend? Maybe I will never know!

gau·de·a·mus igi·tur ˌgau̇-dē-ˈä-mu̇s-ˈi-gi-ˌtu̇r. : therefore let us rejoice. Despite its use as a formal graduation hymn, it is a jocular, lighthearted composition that pokes fun at university life.[citation needed] The song is thought to originate in a Latin manuscript from 1287. It is in the tradition of carpe diem ("seize the day") with its exhortations to enjoy life. It was known as a beer-drinking song in many early universities and is the official song of many schools, colleges, universities, institutions, student societies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudeamus_igitur
Date: 12-Mar-2023 0:48

The label reads:
     ID 2476. Robert Sivell
     Nurse Violet Eleanor Reid, G.M.

It was presumably returned to the family at some point after the war, perhaps when the museum archives were too crowded.
Date: 22-May-2020 16:15
